It is great that this is getting traction because high end Z170 boards are just cheaper and you really don’t lose any big features (optane could be one exception?). Gigabyte needs a lot of pins taped and MSI only needs two pins taped (if you can even get it to work with more than 8 threads). Don’t forget to tape your CPU too, ASUS and ASRock needs only 2 taped and 2 shorted. However, people on Win Raid have an automatic tool to create a Coffee Lake BIOS so you should be able to create on with ease. The tricky part of it is getting the BIOS. Similarly the ASRock Z170 OC FORMULA and Maximus VIII Extreme should have no issue at all. Look at the Gigabyte Z170X SOC FORCE, that board has 2 IR35201s and a real 16 phase Vcore, there is no reason why it cannot run a 9900K even under LN2. I’m pretty sure all high end Z170 boards will even run the 9900K no problem, with the exception of MSI, whose boards won’t POST with CPUs having more than 8 threads. The heat sink on that board is very heavy and has decent surface area (even better if you remove the stupid IO cover). That board has a doubled up 4 phase (8) with 35A or 40A power stages. Not surprised at all, I ran an 8700K at 5.2GHz on a Maximus VIII Hero with no issue. If you're still having concerns, we recommend you check out /r/buildapc.
